[ Energy wasting lightbulbs.] EU and G8 ministers were meeting in Berlin to talk about energy efficiency, and we wanted to make an impression. So we took 10,000 old fashioned energy wasting incandescent lightbulbs and crushed them with a mechanized roller

Posted by Page (in Amsterdam) A few days ago, I posted about a very encouraging poll that showed a majority of US voters oppose Japan’s so-called “scientific” whaling program, and that voters are more likely to vote for a presidential candidate who takes a firm anti-whaling stance. As an American who’s had to suffer through 7 years of George W

Posted by Page (in Amsterdam) Yesterday, I wrote about an unusual story: a young minke whale had somehow found its way from New York Harbor into the notoriously polluted Gowanus Canal. Marine biologists anxiously watched the whale around the clock. I was hoping that we’d see good news in today’s headlines… but we didn’t

The head of the US Environmental Protection Agency is claiming a victory in the fight against global warming, and crediting the visionary climate change policies of George Bush for the results. On Monday, EPA Administrator Dave Johnson announced that US greenhouse gas emissions grew by only 1% in 2005

A lot has been made of a paper (Lyman et al, 2006) that appeared last year that claimed that the oceans had, contrary to expectation, cooled over the period 2003-2005. At the time, we (correctly) pointed out that this result was going to be hard to reconcile with continued increases in sea level rise (

Posted by Page (in Amsterdam) As an American voter, I have a keen interest in our national election next year. It’s another chance for those of us who are concerned about the environment to vote in a president who won’t continue to destroy it. We have two political parties: Republicans (George W. Bush’s party) and Democrats

In some potential good news for the anti-whaling movement, it appears that Nicaragua will no longer vote for alongside pro-whaling nations at the International Whaling Commission (IWC). I say “appears” only because the article in question is in Spanish and the Babel Fish translation was nearly incomprehensible

Posted by Dave (in Ireland) At a symposium on whaling in New York, hosted by the UN Environment Program e New York, Daniel Pauly, a specialist in global fish stocks, has undermined Japan’s motives for hunting humpback whales next year. The whaling industry had claimed that humpbacks are outcompeting Antarctic minke whales - a concept that Dr

The World Bank is (rightly) taking a lot of heat recently. Not just for the apparently improper role Bush backed World Bank President Wolfowitz had in getting a promotion for someone he was romantically involved with. There is that. As well as the World Bank’s complicity in the destruction of our world’s second largest rainforest (the Congo)

Posted by Dave (in Ireland) OK, so it may be alien concept to Euro-types like me, but at t’other side of the Atlantic, we’re having what’s known as a “bake sale” (look, there’s even a Wikipedia entry!). I guess we do have similar fundraising-style things over here - according to the linked article, it’s called a “cake stall” in the UK

I was taught a lesson today that I suspect will live with me for a long time. To cut a long story short, I had written an article for the website about the Congo rainforest. A Belgian colleague asked me to change the wording in one paragraph as it could be perceived as offensive to African people

Climate is very hot in the press these days (yes little joke there), so I’ll do an occasional roundup when I see interesting stories. The big news right now is the US Supreme Court ruling that the Environmental Protection Agency can and should regulate carbon dioxide pollution (or at least come up with a defensible reason not to)
